Designing Emotionally Intelligent Machines

12:30PM — 1:30PM / JW Marriott, Salon 8

How can designers ensure the intelligent machines and services they create are more "Big Hero 6" and less "Ex Machina?" Join Sophie Kleber, Executive Director of Product and Innovation at Huge, to learn how emotional intelligence and conversational UIs are humanizing brands and making personality tangible. This presentation will explore how empathy is becoming an important design element in the machine reaction algorithm.

The Risks of the Quantified Mind

12:30PM — 1:30PM / JW Marriott, Salon H

With Google, Apple, and Amazon racing to embed voice services across our devices, conversational user interfaces will soon become ubiquitous. But the shift from screens to voice unlocks a new set of concerns for personalization, distinct from Netflix's recommendations or Google's filter bubbles. Sophia Yeres, senior researcher at Huge, will explore how intelligent assistants will rely on a vast, textured data set of past choices, memories, and desires to condition our lives in the future.

Hacking Google Analytics

9:30AM — 11:00AM / Westin Austin Downtown, Continental 3

Google Analytics has evolved beyond a basic platform into a suite of analytics products. In this workshop, Dylan Spencer will look at the more advanced ways you can use new tools such as Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, and Google Optimize for A/B testing to uncover insights and turn your data into something people will use.

Computers, We Should Talk: The Conversational Web

11:00AM — 12:00PM / JW Marriott, Salon 7

We’re close to having full-on conversations with our computers, and that’s a good thing. The web is evolving from a browser-based, text-heavy experience to one that’s based on natural spoken language, context, and artificial intelligence. But our current systems and social attitudes will need an adjustment before conversational computing becomes mainstream. Join Gela Fridman, Huge’s managing director of technology, Dries Buytaert, co-founder and CTO of Acquia, Joshua Brustein of Bloomberg, and Chris Messina as they explore how conversational computing could harness the power and reach of mobile and make computing accessible to people of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultures.

Designing Intelligent Conversations with Chatbots

11:00AM — 2:00PM / Westin Austin Downtown, Continental 1

Learn how applying design thinking to chatbots can help create more trustworthy experiences and allow us to quickly experiment with Artificial Intelligence. In this fast-paced workshop led by Austin Beer, David Sicher and Matt Ryan, we will work in teams to design our own chatbots, exploring the human-centered methods, ethical issues, design process, and conversation design necessary to create revolutionary experiences.
